General description:.............................. (Back to top)

  • The Sheraton Waikiki has 2 different buildings, the main building is 26 floors high, is ocean front and was built in 1970. When it was first built was a marvel in design, after 4 decades the design has become somewhat outdated even though several renovations have been performed on the property. The common areas are elegant, with a spacious lobby, shops, restaurants and bars, the pool however is a bit small, this should change since the present owners are planning a multimillion dollar upgrade that seems to involve a larger and common pool area with the Royal Hawaiian Hotel next door and also a Sheraton property. This major renovation is supposed to start sometime 2008 and end sometime 2009. There is a second building or "wing", built in the back, away from the ocean and next to the hotel entrance that has no more than 10 or 12 floors. This wing was originally built for Pan American Airline's crew, after the airline demise, the building was named "Manor" and turned into guests rooms.
The property belongs to a Japanese company and is managed by Sheraton Hotels.
This hotel is getting ready for a badly needed major renovation of part of the common areas that is scheduled to be finished by 2009.

What we like about this hotel:
.............................. (Back to top)

  • It does not get any more central than this, it is the most "clicked" number in our map and no doubt about it, it is because of the location.
  • It is on the water and has the service that you have come to expect from a Sheraton Hotel.

What you may not like about this hotel:.............................. (Back to top)

  • One the main ideas to stay on an oceanfront hotel is to be able to enjoy the beach in front of it, unfortunately there is almost no sand on that area. The only 4 star hotel with a good beach in front of it is the Hilton Hawaiian Village (number 12 in our map)
  • It is not clear what will happen with the rooms at the so called "manor" wing of the hotel but unless major changes are made, these rooms have never been in line with the quality of the hotel, in other words, stay away from them, they are not worth it.
  • The hotel was built over 30 years ago, if this was Las Vegas, it would be gone by now, despite the massive amount of money that was spent in this hotel over the years, is still an old design, not old as "charming old" like the Royal Hawaiian or the Moana Surfrider, but old as outdated. Normally for the kind of money that these rooms sell for, people expect a better product.
  • There are already some areas affected by the upcoming renovation project, you may want to stay away from this property until all renovations are completed hopefully by late 2009.
